This mega-hotel is located in a three-building Eastside complex of monoliths--including conference space, stores, restaurants, offices and a health club--right across the street from Bellevue Square (or Bell Square, as those in the shopping know call it), considered by many to be the region's mecca mall. A shared courtyard area beside the driveway lends the collection of buildings human scale, and the outdoor seating for dining al fresco and enjoying the occasional northwest sunny day provides some character.

There isn't much that is distinctive about the exterior of this big grey building, and all of the 553 guest rooms are essentially the same. But the views from the exercise room and pool area can't be beat. Look out at the Cascade Mountains and Capitol Hill while working out or gaze onto the Port of Seattle and much of downtown while swimming in the small pool. A soak in the sauna is accompanied by views of Safeco Field and the Seahawks Stadium. The notable fitness room has a Brazilian cherry wood floor made of wood leftover from the construction of the deck at the mega-mansion of Microsoft bigwig Bill Gates.

This full-service Belltown hotel may not have much curb appeal, but the inside is a different story. Besides having a cozy, comfortable lobby with a warm fireplace, it has an abundance of friendly people waiting to greet you at the front desk. The establishment is popular with Europeans, who are more familiar with the French-owned hotel chain than Americans are. The hotel emphasizes the service offered by its experienced, highly knowledgeable staff

In England or Europe, this property would no doubt be described as an estate. It features a 10,000-square-foot mansion and mature landscaped grounds surrounded by forest. Instead, it bows to its casual Kitsap Peninsula surroundings and humbly refers to itself as a country inn. Visitors can arrive by car, or they can boat in and tie up at the private pier
